When you buy a PDF
Payment is handled by PayPal. Your card or bank details go to PayPal, not to us, and PayPal's own privacy notice applies to what it collects. From PayPal we receive and keep:
- the PayPal order and capture references, the item, the amount and currency, and the payment status;
- the email address and name on your PayPal payment;
- the time and wording version of your confirmation that you wanted immediate access;
- your download link's expiry date and how many times it has been used, and whether the order email was sent.
Why: to deliver what you paid for, send your download link, help if something goes wrong, prevent misuse of download links, and keep the business and tax records the law requires. The legal bases are performing our contract with you and our legal obligations.
How long: order records are kept for 6 years after the end of the financial year of the sale, for tax and accounting purposes, then deleted. Records of PayPal's payment notifications are kept for up to 12 months.
Free resources
Free resources are direct downloads: we do not ask for your name or email. Like most websites, the web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page requested) for security, for a limited period set by our host.
The website assistant (chat)
The "Ask PHP AIR" chat box is an AI assistant, not a person. It answers only from information Ian has approved about PHP AIR, and it can make mistakes. Please do not type personal details into it; for anything about you or your project, email hello@phpair.co.uk.
- What is sent where: when AI answers are switched on, your question and the last few messages of the current chat are sent from our server to xAI (the provider of the Grok AI models) to produce the answer, together with our approved information about PHP AIR. We ask xAI not to store the conversation (the
store: falsesetting); xAI's own terms and privacy policy apply to its processing. Your IP address and browser are not sent to xAI. When AI answers are off, questions are answered on our own server and nothing is sent to anyone else. - Conversations are not stored: we do not save chat messages or answers, and they are not written to our logs. The chat lives only in your open browser tab and is gone when you close or reload the page. The only thing the chat keeps in your browser is a small flag (in local storage) saying the greeting bubble has been shown, so it appears once.
- Rate limiting: to stop abuse, we count how many questions each visitor asks per minute and per day. We store only a scrambled (keyed hash) form of your IP address with those counts, never the address itself or anything you typed, and the counts are deleted automatically within 48 hours.
Why: to answer visitors' questions about PHP AIR and to keep the service working fairly (our legitimate interests).
When you email us
We keep your message and our reply so we can help you, for as long as needed to deal with it and any follow-up.
Sharing
We do not sell your information. It is shared only with the services that make this work: PayPal (payments), our web host Hostinger (website, email and database storage), our email provider for sending your download link, and xAI for answering chat questions when AI answers are on (see above).
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it where we do not have to keep it. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). Email hello@phpair.co.uk.
